Hannukah

The holiday of Hannukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight day holiday to commemorate the rededication of the second Beit Hamikdash during the time of the Hashmonaiim. During this holiday we light candles starting with one candle on the first day and ending with eight candles on the last day. Before lighting the candles, we say special prayers and berachot. Additionally there are pizmonim that we sing on this holiday and we say Hallel as well as read from the Torah on all eight days.

First Day	יום ראשון	During Hannukah holiday we read from the Torah in the Shahrit prayers. The Torah reading is from Parashat Naso, which discusses the Korbanot or sacrifices that the leaders of the twelve tribe brought at the inauguration of the Mishkan. The first day starts with the Birchat Kohanim. On the last day we end with the topic of the Menorah that was used in the Mishkan. During the weekday, there are three aliyot. When Hanukkah occurs on Shabbat the last aliyah for the Torah is from Parashat Naso and there is a special Haftarah.
